Indian bully convicted of homophobic bias crime

A guilty verdict was delivered Friday in the case of a former Rutgers University student accused of using a webcam to spy on his roommate in a sexual encounter with another man. Dharun Ravi, 20, could face years in prison and deportation to his native India when he is sentenced in May. The jury found Ravi guilty of all 15 counts of invasion of privacy and bias intimidation, though he was found not guilty of some sub-parts of some of the charges. The panel ruled he used the webcam to spy on roommate Tyler Clementi and did so because of a bias against gays. On other charges, the jury found Ravi not guilty. Clementi committed suicide after the spying incident in September 2010. The defense argued that Ravi had no bias towards gays and was just being immature. Joe Clementi, Tyler Clementi's father, said he hopes the verdict sends a message. "To our college, high school and even middle school youngsters, I would say this: you're not necessarily going to, you're going to meet a lo! t of people in your lifetime. Some of these people you may not like, but just because you don't like them, does not mean you have to work against them," said Joe Clementi. "When you see somebody doing something wrong, tell them that's not right. Stop it." Ravi was not charged with causing Clementi's death.
